Overview
My wife and I visited Egypt and hiked in Sinai with 2 days hike ( night on the mountain) covering 2285 meters tall Mount Sinai (Mozes) and Mount Catherine (Tallest mountain of Egypt at 2642 meters) descending through Wadi Lahmer in a Single Loop trail
It was an enjoyable experience with full satisfaction.
The geology here is very beautiful, in some places similar to Jordan.
Please refer my wikiloc trail for more pictures.
The 2 individual day hikes are also recorded and there are lots of pictures to refer.

If you can spend 3 full days in St Catherine village area of Sinai peninsula, you can have a greater long hike of Mount Sinai, Mount Catherine and Mount Abbas Pasha loop.
Hiking Mount Sinai and Mount Catherine in Egypt’s Sinai Province is an unforgettable adventure that combines breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and the warm hospitality of local Bedouin guides. This two-day journey offers a unique opportunity to explore the region’s highest peaks, immerse yourself in Bedouin culture, and experience the serene beauty of Wadi Arbayeen and Wadi Lahmar.
Day 1: Mount Sinai and Wadi Arbayeen
The adventure begins at St. Catherine’s Monastery, a historic site nestled at the base of Mount Sinai (Jebel Musa). This mountain is steeped in religious significance, believed to be the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments. Accompanied by Bedouin guides, hikers ascend the mountain via the traditional camel trail or the steeper “Steps of Repentance.” The climb takes approximately 3-4 hours, depending on your pace.
At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains. Many hikers choose to time their ascent to witness the sunrise, which casts a golden glow over the rugged landscape. After soaking in the views, the descent begins, leading you to Wadi Arbayeen, a picturesque valley known for its lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere.
Here, you’ll set up camp for the night. Bedouin guides often provide traditional meals cooked over an open fire, offering a taste of authentic Sinai cuisine. The night is spent under a blanket of stars, with the sounds of nature providing a soothing backdrop.
Day 2: Mount Catherine and Wadi Lahmar
The second day starts early with a hearty breakfast before embarking on the hike to Mount Catherine (Jebel Katharine), the tallest mountain in Egypt. The trail from Wadi Arbayeen to Mount Catherine is challenging but rewarding, with stunning views of the Sinai highlands along the way. The ascent takes around 5-6 hours, depending on your fitness level.
At the summit, you’ll find breathtaking vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. The descent leads you into Wadi Lahmar, another beautiful valley characterized by its unique rock formations and vibrant colors. The hike concludes as you return to St. Catherine village, where you can reflect on your journey and enjoy the hospitality of the local community.
Tips for the Journey
- Preparation: Ensure you’re physically prepared for the hike, as it involves steep ascents and long hours of walking. Pack essentials like water, snacks, sunscreen, and comfortable hiking gear.
- Guides and Camels: Hiring Bedouin guides is highly recommended for their expertise and knowledge of the terrain. Camels can be used to carry supplies, making the journey more manageable.
- Respect Local Culture: Engage with the Bedouin guides and learn about their traditions and way of life. Their stories and insights add depth to the experience.
This adventure is not just a physical challenge but also a spiritual and cultural journey that leaves a lasting impression. Whether you’re drawn by the historical significance of Mount Sinai or the natural beauty of Mount Catherine, this hike is a testament to the wonders of the Sinai Peninsula.
