This pilgrimage hike trail of 48 kms with 2100 meters elevation gain is considered as most difficult trek in Kerala and usually hiked over 3 days for a pleasant experience.

The trail is open for trekking only from the second week of January to March, making it a highly sought-after adventure. But there are also off season opportunities available after the rain season.

Agastyakoodam Trek and Its History
Agastyakoodam, is one of the highest peaks in Kerala, standing at 1,868 meters above sea level.
Located within the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary in the Western Ghats, this trek is renowned for its challenging terrain and breathtaking natural beauty.
Agastyakoodam is named after the revered Hindu sage Agastya, who is believed to have meditated here. Sage Agastya is a prominent figure in Hindu mythology, mentioned in ancient texts like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The peak is considered a sacred site, attracting pilgrims who come to pay their respects to the sage.
The Trek
The trek to Agastyakoodam is a journey through diverse landscapes, including dense forests, grasslands, and rocky terrains. The trail is open for trekking only during the months of January to March, making it a seasonal adventure. The trek starts from Bonacaud, a village located about 60 km from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), and covers approximately 28 kilometers one way.
Agastyakoodam is part of the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized protected area. The region is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including over 2,000 species of medicinal plants. The air in this area is said to have medicinal properties, adding to the allure of the trek.

Procedure for Getting Entry Tickets
- Booking Period: The trekking season is from the second week of January to March, for about 45 days.
- Online Booking: Tickets can be booked online through the Kerala Forest Department portal. The booking opens a week before the trekking season begins.
The off season opportunities available after the rain season, the website is tvmwildlife.com - Ticket Details: Each trekking pass costs INR 20,000 and allows up to 5 people. The pass includes the forest permit and accommodation.
- Booking Tips: Be ready with your details (name, age, contact number, ID proof, etc.) and have your debit/credit card details handy. Due to high demand, it’s advisable to book from different devices simultaneously.
- Offline Booking: Alternatively, tickets can be booked offline from the PTP Nagar Forest Office in Trivandrum, but this involves waiting in long queues.
Arrangements by the Authorities
- Trekking Itinerary: The trek starts from Bonacaud Forest Station and ends at Athirumala, the base camp. The next day, trekkers begin the steep climb to Agasthyakoodam and return to the base camp by noon on day 3.
- Guides and Safety: Trek guides from the Kani tribe patrol the trail to ensure the safety of trekkers. They provide valuable assistance and information about the trail.
- Prohibited Items: Alcohol, cigarettes, perfumes and cooking inside the forest are prohibited. Performing pooja rituals is also not allowed.
- Accommodation: Basic accommodation is provided at the base camp. Slow trekkers can stay an extra night at the base camp before returning.
- Environmental Protection: Trekkers are encouraged to follow eco-friendly practices to preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of the area.
Best Time to Trek
The best time to trek is during the winter months (January to March) when the weather is cool and pleasant, with temperatures ranging between 12°C to 20°C. The flora is in full bloom, and you can spot many migratory birds1.

- Clothing: Warm clothing, rain gear, and sturdy hiking boots.
- Gear: Backpack, trekking poles, headlamp, and water bottles.
